To anyone who happens upon this Blog, my name is Brittney. I am 29 years old, living in the amazing (and cold) State of Alaska. I am posting on this blog for a college music appreciation course that I decided to take for fun (yep…for fun). I recently applied for graduation with my Business Administration degree (approved for this spring), but I could not let go of having something productive to do outside of my general working and social life, hence the music appreciation course. So far it has been quite interesting and has reminded me of why I love music.
Speaking of my love for music, I am a connoisseur of all types music: Classical, Alternative, Rock, Pop, K-POP, J-Pop, latin, grunge…..the list is never ending. My love for music started when I was nine years old and my family moved to Alaska because of the military. As we traveled to Alaska (for three whole weeks from Valdosta, Georgia) I had the realization that there was more then just country music in existence. I remember being in the back seat of our Mitsubishi, driving through the lower 48, and hearing Hip Hop music from other vehicles. I love my parents and my grandparents, but they inadvertently sheltered my musical appreciation. The only thing they ever listed to was 90’s country music and the more popular 80’s music, so you can probably imagine my expression the first time I listened to a Hip Hop, Rock, or Rap song… I was shocked. Even now, I seriously do not understand how my parents kept me oblivious to Michael Jackson and Madonna as they were such popular and mainstream musical artists, but they sure did….
As I grew in my appreciation of music, I decided I needed to participate. In Fourth grade, I was adamant that I learn the most fascinating (and difficult) string instrument just because I could. Currently, I have played the violin for 19 years. On a random side note, I almost forgot how old I was until I typed that number… I love playing the violin, and will probably never stop.
As someone that lives in Alaska…concerts are difficult. If it wasn’t so expensive to travel from this state, or if artists performed more often in this area, I would probably have more then the 30ish concerts I have attended under my belt. All of my recent concerts (I just attended one in LA on the 19th) are because I travel to them.
My current, but not so current as its been since 2008, music obsession is (drumroll) K-POP. I will probably have to explain it in a different post, because otherwise I would banter on about it, but lets just say this “genre” is entirely underappreciated.
I have had a huge respect for BTS (or Bangtan Sonyeondan), a korean band of seven men since 2015, and actually saw them in concert in 2018 while in Canada (I have attached a picture at the top of this post from that trip). I will just leave their most recent music video as a link for you to enjoy.
I guess that is it for my first blog post. Congrats to anyone that made it through my condensed musical life story. To all my classmates that made it to this blog-have fun this semester!
